"There’s more to ballads/ Than weave and dodge and stall./ Some folks say it’s a cokehead’s ball/ Some say a cure for all./"

Poet

Charles Bernstein [United States, 1950]

Poet, essayist, translator and critic Charles Bernstein was one of the founders of Language poetry, a highly influential movement. Bernstein’s poetry explores the many ways that language is used in different social contexts. His poetry combines the languages of politics, popular culture and advertising with literary jargon in a way that is serious yet playful; critical yet humorous. Sharp and satirical, his work interrogates language and its performative nature, word by word. His most recent book, Near/Miss, received the Bollingen Prize in January, the most prestigious prize for American poetry, awarded every two years by Yale University. The judging committee said, “His extraordinary new collection of poems, Near/Miss, finds Bernstein deploying his characteristically incisive satire and sharp wit to dismantle the clichés driving public speech.”
