Koleka Putuma [South Africa, 1993]
We are very sorry that Koleka Putuma will not be able to perform at the 50th Poetry International Festival due to visa problems. Instead of Koleka Putuma the Dutch poet Simone Atangana Bekono will read.
Poet, performer and theatre practitioner Koleka Putuma took the South African literary scene by storm with her debut, Collective Amnesia (2017), which became an instant bestseller. Putuma is seen as the groundbreaking new voice in South African poetry. She belongs to a generation that has no memory of apartheid, but that does face the consequences and repercussions on a daily basis. Her work explores themes such as race, homophobia, womxnhood and the impact of power structures on relationships, religion and politics. Her poetry is daring and inventive – not only in terms of the subject matter and language, but also the form of the poems, some of which consist of just one line. As the winner of the inaugural South African National Poetry Slam, Putuma is also a powerful performer of her own work.
