Rita Dove [United States, 1952]
The Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Rita Nova has had a major impact on American letters, not only through the nature and quality of her work, but also by serving as an ambassador for poetry. Between 1993 and 1995 she was the youngest and first-ever Black poet to be US Poet Laureate, a role she used to draw attention to the diversity of American poetry and literature. Her own work is lyrical while at the same time being marked by a keen historical and political consciousness. Dove teaches at the University of Virginia and is currently the poetry editor of The New York Times Magazine. Her performances at the 1989 and 1996 festivals left an indelible impression on the Poetry International audience.
