Born in New York in 1931, Ruth Fainlight moved to England at fifteen and went on to build a diverse body of work spanning poetry, stories, and translations. She moved in literary circles that included Sylvia Plath and Ted Hughes, and in 1959 married writer Alan Sillitoe.In Somewhere Else Entirely, Emily Andersen offers an intimate portrait of Fainlight, capturing her at home in London and Brighton with a sharp eye for composition. Through small, meaningful moments, Fainlight reflects on writing, memory, and loss. We follow her on walks and through her notebooks as she describes the feeling of “being in the hands of a poem”. The film takes its title from the poem she wrote after her husband’s death, which she performs herself in the film.
