In an edition where we explore poetry in all its forms, rap should of course not be missing. The fascinating journey of this genre has taken it from dancehalls and the streets of the Bronx to sold-out stadiums and a global audience. Set to hip-hop beats, poetry in rap music has found its way to young and old alike for decades. Today, it is even the most widely enjoyed poetic practice.
Poetry and hip-hop have always been connected and have continually influenced one another. Hip-hop researcher and PhD candidate at Utrecht University, Kim Dankoor, leads this programme and shows us the links between the development of rap and poetry. Afterwards, she will be in conversation with rapper Ella John about the rap and poetry that inspires him.
